ROH_Chapter 7_Transforming The Mind: 2 Spiritual Formation And Our Feelings

Those who continue to be mastered by their feelings— ..are typically persons who in their heart of hearts believe that their feelings must be satisfied. (163
this is just another way of describing the ruined person discussed in chapter 3, the one who makes himself “god” in his world.

ii。
By contrast, the person who happily lets God be God does have a place to stand in dealing with feelings—
They know and deeply accept the fact that their feelings, of whatever kind, do not have to be fulfilled.  (164

No one can succeed in mastering feelings in his or her life who tries to simply take them head-on and resist or redirect them by “willpower” in the moment of choice. To adopt that strategy is to radically misunderstand how life and the human will work。

their strategy is not one of resisting them in the moment of choice but of living in such a way that they do not have such feelings at all, or at least do not have them in a degree that makes it hard to decide against them when appropriate.

They do not wait until it is moving so fast they cannot get off of it. Their aim is not to avoid sin, but to avoid temptation— the inclination to sin. They plan their path accordingly.  119
a major step forward just to sincerely desire, not to not sin, but to have different feelings— feelings that lead away from sin.

transformation of his feelings (emotions, sensations, desires)  (166页,2段)

Without feeling we have no interest in things, no inclination to action.  (167
Feeling is essential to life…Healthy feelings, properly ordered among themselves, are essential to a good life. So if we are to be formed in Christlikeness, we must take good care of our feelings and not just let them “happen.”

We do not have to be victimized by destructive feelings. Even the feelings that harm us are, for the most part, not bad in themselves, but are somehow not properly limited or subordinated. They are out of order. Feelings are, with a few exceptions, good servants. But they are disastrous masters.

When we confuse the condition with the accompanying feeling—…we very likely will try to manage the feelings and disregard or deny the reality of the conditions. That way lie such things as “falling in love with love” and most of the well-known addictions.

as far as our planning for spiritual formation is concerned, we must choose and act with regard to the condition, good or bad, and allow the feelings to take care of themselves, as they certainly will.

MUCH OF THE GREAT power of feelings over life derives not just from the fact that they touch us, move us, but from the fact that they creep over into other areas of our life (171页,4段)

Their very mind has been taken over by one or more feelings and is made to defend and serve those feelings at all costs. It is a fearful condition from which some people never escape. (172

Feelings can be successfully “reasoned with,” can be corrected by reality, only in those (whether oneself or others) who have the habit and are given the grace of listening to reason even when they are expressing violent feelings or are in the grip of them.

Feeling has no limit  … Feeling will then be sought for its own sake, and satisfaction in feeling alone always in turn demands stronger feeling. It cannot limit itself.  (174

Addiction is a feeling phenomenon. The addict is one who, in one way or another, has given in to feeling of one kind or another and has placed it in the position of ultimate value in his or her life.
in their heart of hearts they have accepted the rule of the feeling and have conceded its right to satisfaction.  .. they have no way out  (174页,3段)

In the “modern” condition, feeling will come to exercise almost total mastery over the individual. This is because people in that condition will have to constantly decide what they want to do, and feeling will be all they have to go on. Here lies the secret to understanding contemporary Western life and its peculiar proneness to gross immoralities and addictions. People are overwhelmed with decisions and can only make those decisions on the basis of feelings.

Often they cannot distinguish between their feelings and their will, and in their confusion they also quite commonly take feelings to be reasons. And they will in general lack any significant degree of self-control. This will turn their life into a mere drift through the days and years, which addictive behavior promises to allow them to endure.

ii。
Self-control means that you, with steady hand, do what you don’t want to do (or what you want not to) when that is needed and do not do what you want to do (what you “feel like” doing) when that is needed.

Feelings & emotions are fostered and sustained by ideas and images, though social or bodily conditions also factor in.

a. (There is Order among feelings),不是一个完全困乱的范畴
There is also order among feelings, and it is a much simpler one than most people think. When we properly cultivate with divine assistance those few feelings that should be prominent in our lives, the remainder will fall into place.

b. (Love, Joy, Peace)
What then are the feelings that will dominate in a life that has been inwardly transformed to be like Christ’s? They are the feelings associated with love, joy, and peace.  (178

conditions of the whole person that are accompanied by characteristic positive feelings.

Love is Will to Good, Desire is Will to Consume.
Love is not the same thing as desire, for I may desire something without even wishing it well, much less willing its good.

Feeling - They, more than any other component of our nature, are the “trigger” of sinful action. (193
Feelings have a crucial role in life, but they must not be taken as a basis for action or character change. That role falls to insight, understanding, and conviction of truth, which will always be appropriately accompanied by feeling. Feelings are not fundamental in the nature of things but become so if we assign them that role in life, and then life will not go as it should.
Satan uses feelings to captivate us today by making them more important to our life than they really are, as well as by inducing much false guilt about what we do and do not feel. (194

Thus faith in Christ and the initial hope it inspires lead us to stand in the grace (the action) of God, and standing there leads, in turn, to a life full of love. We will want to see how this love relates to joy and peace, as well as to the rest of the fruit of the Spirit. But first we need to get a clearer picture of love itself, of its four movements required to complete its work in our life, of how (when completed) it casts out fear (1 John 4: 18). Then we shall see the effect of all this on the feeling dimension of our life.
iii。

Love, joy, and peace fostered in divine fellowship simply crowd out fear, anger, unsatisfied desire, woundedness, rejection. There is no longer room for them— (191页,2段)

AND SO, PRACTICALLY SPEAKING, the renovation of the heart in the dimension of feeling is a matter of opening ourselves to and carefully cultivating love, joy, and peace: first by receiving them from God and from those already living in him, and then as we grow, extending love, joy, and peace to others and everything around us in attitude, prayer, and action。
